Geometry Basics

Stand in the corner of a room and look at where the two walls meet. You cannot count a corner the way you count apples, yet one corner can clearly be sharper than another. Ask which of two oddly shaped gardens is bigger, or how much water a bottle holds, and ordinary counting will not settle either question. Geometry gives shape, space, and position exact names, and then finds a way to put numbers on them. What is surprising is how plain its starting points are: a dot and a straight line.

  1. Points, Lines, and Angles

    Two straight roads cross, and four openings appear where they meet. Some of them look the same size and some do not, but looking the same is not a measurement. This lesson builds the vocabulary of points, lines, and turns, and works out how the opening between two directions can be measured at all.

  2. Perimeter and Area

    Fencing a garden and laying grass across it are different jobs. Does a longer fence always surround more ground? This lesson separates the distance around a shape from the flat space inside it, and asks how the space inside a triangle or a slanted shape can be measured at all.

  3. Circles

    Roll a bicycle wheel through one full turn and it moves forward by some distance. Could you predict that distance from the wheel alone, and does the space inside the circle follow the same pattern? A number belonging to circles shows up in both questions, and this lesson tracks down where it comes from.

  4. Volume and Surface Area

    Wrapping a present and filling it with popcorn ask two different questions about the same box. This lesson moves from flat shapes to solid ones, looking at what fills the inside of a container and what covers the outside, and at what happens when a solid is unfolded flat.

  5. The Coordinate Plane

    Telling a friend where to meet in an open field is hard without landmarks. How few numbers would it take to pin down any spot on a flat surface, and would the order of those numbers matter? This lesson brings the number line into two dimensions and asks what can be measured once every point has a name.
